Poker Games

Poker is a popular card game played worldwide and it is a simple game at its core. The different variations, forms, and structures make things a bit more complex. However, you don't need to know how to play all types of poker there; you may stick to just one of the variations that you prefer.

Poker Betting Limit

To understand poker games, you have to first understand the poker betting limit. Poker betting limits refer to the various rules or structures that must be followed when you are betting and raising. These rules govern how much and when you can bet or raise at any given point in a hand/round and they are applicable to any kind of poker type.

If you are completely new to poker and have no idea what are the poker betting limits, then you might get a difficult time jumping from one limit to another. This is mainly because different poker betting limits will need you to apply different strategies for poker

However, the best way to learn about poker betting limits is to play poker games for a few rounds. Many online casinos offer free money poker options which is an ideal place for you to understand and learn each betting limit faster.

Now, let’s have a look at the three main poker betting limits:

1. Fixed

In a poker game using a fixed-limit betting structure, the amount of all bets and raises in any given betting round is fixed.

For example, if the small blind is $1 to start, and you can only raise four times (in most games) on the flop or preflop. On the turn or river (or later betting rounds in razz and stud), the big blind is doubled to $2. That is, each player must put in $4. This is how it works: If you bet $2, the next player can only raise $2 more. The same applies to subsequent rounds.

Since there is a cap on the betting and raising amount, players might find it difficult to bluff, making it hard to master the fixed limit poker. However, this could be generally beneficial to your bankroll.

2. No limit

No-limit poker is easily the most popular type of poker betting limit today. In no-limit poker, the amount of bet or raise is generally unlimited. Players find this type of betting exciting because they have more freedom and are allowed to “all-in” their chips.

This is the total opposite of fixed-limit poker and it allows players to apply different poker strategies according to the number of their chips. For example, in a no-limit poker game, players may choose to check or bet any amount no less than the minimum bet on the poker table during the initial betting round, instead of being forced to follow the bet. On the other hand, the player can bet with any amount and the cap amount is the number of chips they have on the table.

Next, a player can choose to fold, call, or raise if a bet has been made during a betting round. The raise must be at least as much as the most recent bet or raise. All of their remaining chips will be at stake if they choose to raise the most they can — to go “all in”.

3. Pot

Pot limit poker is the combination of limit and no-limit poker. A pot limit is a poker betting structure in which a player can bet or raise any amount between a specific minimum bet and the current pot size. This means that the players will have a cap on how much they can bet but they are only limited to the size of the pot.

For instance, the maximum amount you can wager is determined by the pot size. Suppose the pot is worth $2; you can bet $2, and the pot will be $4. However, the next player may raise $4 more (increasing the pot to $8), then the next player may raise $8 more (making it $16), and so on.

Poker Variations

Poker comes in various forms and variations. each of the poker variants has its unique features and gameplay, including different poker rules and poker hands — and of course, it would require you to use different poker strategy sets to play in different types of poker.

These poker rules and variations in the games add a level of complexity, but they also make poker even more interesting and fun to play. Some of the most popular poker variations include Texas Hold ’em, Omaha, Seven Card Stud, and many others.

When you are playing any poker variation, you have to be aware of the poker rules of that particular game. Once you know the rules and how to play, you can enjoy a game of poker with friends, family, or other poker players. If you are new to poker, don’t worry. It might seem complicated at first, but it is very simple. Once you learn a few rules, you can start playing and have a lot of fun.

Let’s have a look at each of the most popular poker variations:

1. Texas Hold’em

Texas Hold’Em is today’s most popular variation of all poker types. It is played with 2-10 players. In this poker game, each player is dealt two private cards (known as ‘hole cards’) that are unique to them. Then, to form the ‘board,’ five community cards are dealt face-up in several betting rounds known as The Flop, Turn, and River. All players in the game use these shared community cards, along with their hole cards, to form the best five-card poker hand or best poker winning hands possible.

2. Omaha

Omaha is derived from Texas Hold’em Poker, they are similar to play as they both use five community cards, and several betting rounds like the Pre-Flop, Flop, Turn, and River are involved. However, in Omaha, each player is dealt 4 hole cards instead of just 2 in the regular Texas Hold’em. The players must then choose two of their four cards and use both of them to make the best possible poker hand

3. Seven Card Stud

In Sevan Card Stud, before the first betting round, two downcards and one upcard are dealt with, followed by three more upcards (with a betting round after each card) and one more downcard. There is a final round of betting after the last downcard is dealt. The pot is won by the best five-card poker hand.

4. Razz

Razz poker is a variation from stud poker. Razz can be played by two to eight people. It does not have any betting rounds like Flop, Turn, and River (like Hold’em or Omaha) or any community cards, like a seven-card stud. Unlike seven-card studs, the objective of razz is to make the best five-card poker hand possible out of the seven cards dealt.

5. Five Card Draw

Five Card Draw is also one of the most common types of poker games. Each player is dealt five cards, and then there is a round of betting. Then, in some circles, each player may discard up to three cards (4 if your last card is an ace or wild card) and receive back (from the deck) the number of cards discarded.

6. Badugi

Badugi is also one of the most recognized poker variants. The main goal of Badugi is to form the lowest four-card hand possible with four different suits and no pairs. It’s a triple draw, lowball game where after the cards are dealt, each player has three chances to discard a certain number of cards from their hand and draw new cards to make the best poker hand. In addition, Badugi hands are ranked according to their highest card, with aces always acting as low cards and straights being ignored.

7. Rummy

Rummy differs slightly from the majority of poker variants. Rummy is a set of matching card games in which the cards have the same rank or sequence and are of the same suit. Its primary goal is to construct melds, which are groups of three or four of the same rank or run. It simply means that there are three or more cards in the same unit’s sequence. A player wins the game by getting rid of all their cards.

8. Chinese Poker

Chinese Poker is a unique variant of poker games. It is played with a 52-card deck which does not include a joker. To begin, each player will receive 13 starting cards and the main objective here is to divide the cards into three segments: a five-card back hand, a five-card middle hand, and a three-card front hand, which rank higher than all other player hands at the table. The Poker Hands Rule in Chinese Poker is basically the same as most of the poker variants. Hence, if you’re familiar with the basic poker rules, you can pick up this poker variant easily!
